King Lear

Donmar on tour

The ageing King Lear decides to divide his Kingdom between his daughters, awarding each according to their professed love for him.  His youngest daughter refuses to indulge her father and is banished whilst his older daughters, once land and power are theirs, turn against their father with tragic consequences.

King Lear

Alongside this plot runs the story of the Duke of Gloucester and his two sons, one legitimate, the other illegitimate.  Once again family bonds are tested and found wanting as the bitter struggle for power supersedes love and filial loyalty.

Brought to Hall for Cornwall by the Donmar, we are delighted to welcome Sir Derek Jacobi in the role of Lear with an excellent supporting cast.

‘It is Derek Jacobi’s moment, and nothing dims that. He made the familiar lines new and shook the heart’ The Times
