Theatre & Film
o-region works across theatre and film telling stories that raise smiles, punch guts, broaden horizons and affirm lives. Working class, artist-led and rooted in our native Cornwall, we produce work for local, national and international audiences and provide talent development and showcasing opportunities for all ages and backgrounds.
Formed in 2002, o-region is a multi-faceted production company whose work spans theatre, film and events.
The company has produced and toured original theatre work across small scale and rural venues (Laughing Gas by Nick Darke / Carl Grose; Superstition Mountain by Carl Grose; One Darke Night) in schools (Stay Brave Brian Gravy) and midscale (FUP in collaboration with Kneehigh) and in site specific venues (HIRETH in collaboration with Palores Productions)
In film they have produced feature length and short form films including The Midnight Drives by Mark Jenkin, Weekend Retreat and Brown Willy by Brett Harvey. Recently, they have completed their latest film LONG WAY BACK by Brett Harvey (in collaboration with Falmouth University), which is set for festival / general release in 2021.
o-region also pioneered and curate regular FILM CHALLENGEs in collaboration with Falmouth University whereby they encourage filmmakers to create their own work in response to a theme and set length (60 seconds). The most recent challenge in 2020 garnered 618 entries from 75 different countries.
o-region is currently developing a slate of Theatre and film projects for future production.
The company is steered by Artistic Director Simon Harvey supported by long term collaborators Brett Harvey (Filmmaker) and Oliver Berry (Writer / Graphic Designer) We have a network of regular collaborators (performers, Musical directors, writers, Filmmakers, Graphic Artists) and a strong commitment to supporting new talent.
Artistic Director: Simon Harvey
Alongside his work as Artistic Director with o-region, Simon maintains a portfolio career as a freelance Theatre Director / Producer / Writer / Lecturer and Workshop Leader.
He is an Associate Lecturer in Film and Acting at Falmouth University and has worked extensively for Kneehigh Theatre as an Associate Director touring to midscale venues Nationally and Internationally.
He works regularly for Hall for Cornwall, overseeing and delivering much of the Theatre and performance side of the Youth provision (Youth Theatre / Musical Mondays). Since 2015 he has also been employed to write, co-produce and direct the main house Hall for Cornwall Christmas show.
He is a Board Member for Creative Kernow, Screen Cornwall and Prodigal UPG.
He is a current member of the BBC’s 2020/21 Cornish Voices New Writers Group.
In 2020 Simon was made a Bard of the Gorsehd for services to promoting Cornwall through the media. His Bardic name is Mab Hwedlow (Son of Stories).
Simon’s recent directing work includes: The Canterbury Tales (David Mynne) due to tour 2021 , A Cornish Carol (also Co-writer / Performer), The Illustrated Girl (Kneehigh / Hall for Cornwall), The Sad Club (HFC Youth Theatre) by Luke Barnes (as part of National Theatre Connections), HIRETH (also Co-producer), FUP (also adapter / writer) Sleeping Beauty (HFC) (also Co writer / Co-producer)
