Artists Commissions_

Be a part of our amazing transformation, and leave your mark for years to come. We have an exciting opportunity for an established artist to install an artwork in our opeway of the tranformed theatre - a corridor connecting Boscawen Street to Back Quay through the ground floor of building.

What are we looking for?

We are inviting expressions of interest from artists for an installation that will be in place by Autumn 2020. The artwork will represent the rich tapestry of stories that breathe through our walls, the fabric of the building itself  and/or the many uses of this historic building which sits at the heart of Truro.

We would like artists to propose an artwork which runs directly along the whole Opeway wall opposite the auditorium. The artwork space is approximately 25 x 4 m.

What is an opeway?

Ope is a Cornish dialect word for an alleyway or passageway between buildings. Opeways tend to be narrow and provide a quick cut-through. To this day, Truro has a number of narrow opes crisscrossing through the city. These include the imaginatively-titled Squeeze Guts Alley, Swifties Ope and Tippetts Backlet.

What should my proposal include?

The expression of interest should consider the following interpretive narratives:

  • The uses of the building in which the theatre is now housed. City Hall has been used as a jail, police station, stannary court, cinema, ice rink, rifle range, wedding venue, hosted flea markets, fat stock markets, car shows, fashion shows and hunt balls. Bingo nights, banquets, roller rinks, flower competitions and baby-bathing competitions have all taken place within these walls.
  • How the changes of uses have changed the fabric of the building.
  • How the walls have changed, the surface of the flooring, the light levels, signage, partitions.
