Casting Call – Short film in Cornwall

Synopsis: Based in a timelessly depicted modern-day Cornwall, an endearing friendship between a Grandmother and a Grandson is put in jeopardy when the Grandmother is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The boy’s interest in painting becomes the structure for the film, and a mirrored progression takes place between a series of Picasso inspired portraits of his grandmother and the advancement of her illness.

Shoot Dates: W/C 15th January 2018, Falmouth and Cornwall based, EDR pay

LOOKING FOR:

  • Hugh – LEAD ROLE

A quiet outsider, content in his own company, Hugh is most happy painting at his easel or with his nose buried in an art book. His Grandma is the main advocate for his artistic interests, and their shared passion has allowed them to build a friendship. The friendship indirectly highlights a lack of connection between him and the rest of his family. When his Grandma is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Hugh’s artwork becomes his way of coming to terms with her illness and, inevitably, the fate of her deterioration.

MALE | AGED 15-18 YRS

  • Grandmother – LEAD ROLE

Grandma is blunt yet endearing, outwardly she appears harmless and naïve but inwardly she is sharp and deceiving, something that she enjoys to play on with her Alzheimer’s diagnosis. As the illness progresses the mischief begins to fade and her joy is found predominantly in the time spent with her Grandson, Hugh, and his artwork.

FEMALE | AGED 65-85 YRS

  • Mother – SUPPORTING ROLE

Exasperated by her mother’s illness, she struggles to preserve the family’s unity and stability. Hugh’s growing detachment forms a weakness within her that builds an inevitable tension between them as she grapples with the impending fate of her mother’s illness.

FEMALE | AGED 40-55 YRS

  • Father – SUPPORTING ROLE

A comfortable family man, generally blissfully unaware of undercurrents within the family. He sees everything in a matter-of-fact manner; his life has followed a very specific and traditional formula, a formula that he wished his family would abide by more conscientiously.

MALE | AGED 40-55 YRS
