Our friends from the BSO return with our much-anticipated autumn classical season opener featuring Dvořák’s New World Symphony and some fireworks from incredible violin virtuoso Nemanja Radulović, ahead of his star turn at the BBC Proms the following week.

Remaining incredibly fresh and abounding with memorable melodies, the Ninth Symphony describes Dvořák’s own spiritual and emotional journey from his intense longing for his beloved Bohemia to the thrill of the “New World” and its varied peoples.

And, whisper it quietly, many of us will remember the Largo movement from this symphony from ‘that’ Hovis advert, judged to be the most well-loved ad of all time with British audiences, blending misty-eyed nostalgia with those famous strains, played in that case by a colliery band.

Despite some initial criticism that it was unplayable, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto lost little time in establishing itself as a concert favourite. One of the more demanding works for the violin virtuoso, it is more remarkable still for its unwavering melodic inspiration and passionate expression of human feeling.

Tchaikovsky speaks to us from the heart, using the voice of the solo violin as his medium. Nemanja Radulović arrives with us a fully-fledged superstar, with his sheer firepower and audacious performance style…a clip from YouTube of him at work below!

Schumann’s overture to his sole opera sets the mood and foreshadows the story’s path from a brooding intensity to an ecstatic joy.
