About Shobana Jeyasingh

Shobana Jeyasingh is a Chennai‑born, UK‑based choreographer who founded Shobana Jeyasingh Dance in 1989 and has since created more than 60 acclaimed works for stage, screen and site‑specific locations. Rooted in her experiences as a female postcolonial artist, her choreography combines intellectual depth with striking physicality, informed by her training in Bharata Natyam and her academic background in English literature. Her work has toured internationally and includes major commissions for renowned companies such as Rambert, Ballet Black and the Venice Biennale. Beyond choreography, she has made significant contributions to the dance sector through writing, research, judging for BBC Young Dancer and serving on numerous arts panels. Her many honours include a Nesta Fellowship, multiple honorary doctorates, a Lifetime Achievement Award (WOW Women in Creative Industries Awards) and her appointment as CBE in 2020.
