Windrush Day Celebration

Fri 21 Jun | 12:30pm – 2:15pm

Year 5 and 6 students are invited to attend Black Voices Cornwall’s very first Celebrating Windrush ‘76 event. This year is the 76th anniversary of the Empire Windrush arriving in Britain in 1948. The Windrush was the largest migration of people from the Caribbean to Britain and has had significant impact and helped shaped Britain today. Black Voices Cornwall believe learning about the Windrush is essential for all students and we hope you take up this opportunity to enrich your student’s cultural capital.

This is a fully inclusive and accessible event, and an excellent opportunity for your students to experience an afternoon extravaganza immersed in the Windrush story.

With Performances by:

The Steelers

The Steelers are a 25-piece steel pan orchestra from Treviglas Academy in Newquay. The band has been going for 25 years and has had hundreds of students from Treviglas enjoy being part of the group. The Steelers have evolved from being a typical school band into a bit of a festival outfit, performing at events and festivals across the Southwest where crowds dance and sing along to their set of eclectic well-known songs arranged for Steel Band.
Expect the unexpected.

Ubuntu

Farewell Jamaica is an interactive performance that follows our character, Nev, as he embarks on the historic journey, aboard HMT Empire Windrush, travelling from Jamaica to Britain. Follow Nev’s footsteps as he tackles the challenges of his new life in the Mother Country.
